Kakinoshima Ruins and Ofune Ruins registered as World Cultural Heritage Sites
The site was registered in July 2021. Officially, it is called "Jomon Prehistoric Sites in Hokkaido and Northern Tohoku," and within Hokkaido, the "Irie-Takasago Shell Mound" (Toyako Town), the Kitakogane Shell Mound (Date City), and the Kiusu Circular Embankment Burial Mounds (Chitose City) were also registered, while the "Washinoki Site" in Mori Town was registered as a related asset. This is the second World Heritage site in Hokkaido, following the natural heritage site "Shiretoko."
The parking area at the Ofune Ruins has been improved (March 2023), making it much easier to access.
